Who buys cash registers vs. POS systems and why?

You might think cash registers are old school and it wont last in the market much longer. However, our major sale items are cash registers and many customers are still looking to buy. Believe it or not, there is more demand than supply these days like other electronic goods, due to supply shortage issues overseas after the pandemic. Here’s why the cash registers are still selling.

1. Depending on business types, cash registers can be much more cost effective.

We recommend cash registers over POS system to the stores which 1) do not have much inventory to manage, 2) which are small and only need a simple transaction system, 3) budget is tight and 4) do not have many various items to sell.

The major customers who buy cash registers are small mom & pop clothing/accessory/bodega stores, service places such as nail and beauty salons, farmers markets, small restaurants, delivery-only place, grocery stores and small retail stores. Cash registers are less pricier than POS systems and it is not worth the cost of a POS system if your stores do not use functions that POS systems can provide.

2. Cash registers are easy to use

Cash registers mainly handle basic transaction, so the functions are simple and it is much easier to use and to train staffs to use it. The initial programming is also simpler and once the program is set up, the day to day transactions can be done with a few simple steps.

3. Cash registers are now upgraded with many useful functions (Depends on Cash register models)

 1) Electronic Journal

Cash register can keep the record of transactions in journal printers. All the transactions made is printed in the journal printer simultanesouly, so you can audit the daily sales. Some models have functions of archiving this journal on an SD card or USB storage.

 2) Report printing

The end of day (Z report) or middle of the day (X report) are the most commonly used reports to record your daily sales.

 3) Programmable PLUs

Depends on the cash register models & capabilities, upto 100 or more PLUs can be programmable. Therefore, it is very convenient and time saving to use this fuctions.

4)  SD Slot or USB transfer

Some models have these slot for an easy uploading of PLU program /Store info with logos and for an downloading journal records.

5) Peripherals

Using the ports RS-232C/USBs, many peripherals can be connected. Some models can even use the wireless network that can be connected remotely for more convenient use.

The featured example below is Sam4S SPS-300 model.

4. Cash Registers can be a good back-up

Lastly, you own POS system in your store. Even if you don’t use the cash register for an every day transaction, it is always good to prepare for unforeseen situations, like when POS system is down, internet is not working, etc. Having a cash registers as a back up is a good option to keep your business going in case the POS system is not working properly.
